The One Stack Backups does not offer a self-service bare-metal or full-device restore today. Rebuilding a complete device — operating system, applications, and data — onto new or replacement hardware needs the target disk made bootable, and that step is not built. Do not build a disaster-recovery runbook around it.
What Is Available Instead
- File and folder restore (endpoint) — the path the platform performs today. The endpoint agent claims the request and writes the recovered files into a staging tree on the target device; it does not overwrite the live copy in place. See Restoring Files.
- Volume-content image restore onto a distinct target — for a device protected by block-level image backup, a technician can restore volume contents onto a different target device through the API. This copies data onto another volume; it does not make that volume bootable, and it is not a self-service control in the UI.
- SaaS item restore — download-only (a presigned link to the stored item).
Microsoft SQL Server and Active Directory / Domain Controller recovery each have their own paths — a SQL point-in-time restore, and a technician-executed guided procedure for a domain controller — and neither is a bare-metal restore.
Block-Level Image Backup
Block-level (image) backup of a device — the VSS-based capture of a full disk — works, and on Windows only. What is missing is not the capture but the boot: recreating a partition table and making new hardware bootable from the image is the unbuilt follow-up. An image backup is therefore not, by itself, a bare-metal recovery.
FAQ
Can Backups rebuild a failed server onto new hardware? No. There is no bare-metal restore. A technician can restore volume contents onto a separate target with the image-restore path, but that does not produce a bootable system. Rebuilding a bootable device is done with the backup vendor's own tooling, not from Backups.
Does Backups provide boot media for bare-metal recovery? No. Backups does not build or serve recovery media (USB, ISO, or PXE). Where a vendor provides it — for example Veeam's WinPE media or Datto's bare-metal recovery environment — that media and its boot process are the vendor's.
Is there a "Full Device" option in the restore request form? No. The restore types Backups offers are file-level and SaaS item restore. A full-device or bare-metal option is not offered.
