Overview
Device groups let you organize devices into named collections so you can apply monitoring policies, run scripts, or target automations at many devices without selecting them one by one. Technicians use groups to separate servers from workstations, flag high-priority devices, or organize by site or function.
Creating a Device Group
- Go to Devices and click Groups in the sidebar or top navigation.
- Click New Group.
- Give the group a descriptive name (for example, "Contoso Servers" or "Windows 11 Workstations").
- Optionally add a description.
- Click Save.
The group is created empty. Add devices next.
Adding Devices to a Group
From the group:
- Open the group.
- Click Add Devices.
- Search for and select the devices you want to add.
- Click Add.
From a device:
- Open the device detail page.
- Click Edit or look for the Groups field.
- Select the groups this device should belong to.
- Save.
A device can belong to multiple groups.
Removing Devices from a Group
- Open the group.
- Find the device in the member list.
- Click Remove next to the device name.
Removing a device from a group does not delete the device.
Applying Policies to a Group
Once devices are in a group, you can target that group when:
- Creating or assigning a monitoring policy — the policy applies to all current and future members of the group.
- Running a script — choose the group as the target when using "Target Multiple Devices."
- Configuring an automation — set the automation scope to the group.
- Setting up a maintenance window — apply the window to the group.
When you add a new device to a group, it automatically inherits all policies and automations already scoped to that group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a device be in more than one group?
Yes. A device can belong to as many groups as needed. All policies from all its groups apply to it.
If I add a device to a group mid-month, does it pick up all the existing policies?
Yes. Policy inheritance is immediate. The device starts being evaluated against all policies attached to the group as soon as it joins.
Can I nest groups inside other groups?
No. Groups are flat. If you need hierarchical organization, use the client-level scoping (each client is its own container) alongside groups within that client.
I deleted a group by mistake. Are the devices deleted too?
No. Deleting a group only removes the grouping. The devices remain in your device list and are not affected.
