If your MSP qualifies for sales-tax exemption (for example, a 501(c)(3), school, church, government, or resale buyer), you can submit an exemption certificate so the platform stops charging tax on your invoices. This article covers submitting a certificate, the review process, and automated renewals.
Who This Is For
MSP Owner and Finance users who manage the MSP's own tax status with the platform.
Submitting an Exemption Certificate
- Go to /billing/tax-exemption (or click Tax Exemption in the billing sidebar).
- Click to start the wizard (/billing/tax-exemption/wizard).
- The wizard walks you through the exemption details: the type of exemption, the state(s) it applies to, your exemption/registration number, and an upload of the supporting certificate.
- Submit. Your certificate enters the review queue.
You can also be prompted to add exemption details during onboarding if you indicated your MSP is tax-exempt — the same wizard adds the relevant steps.
Review and Activation
A submitted certificate moves through these states:
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pending | Record created; the platform is waiting on your documents. |
| Submitted | Your documents are in the review queue. |
| Approved | A reviewer approved the certificate. |
| Active | Tax is now suppressed on your invoices. |
| Rejected | Returned to you with a reason; fix and resubmit. |
Once a certificate is active, sales tax is suppressed on invoices going forward. Past invoices already issued are not retroactively adjusted by activation.
Automated Renewals
Exemption certificates expire. The platform handles renewal automatically:
- 60 days before expiry — first renewal notice by email.
- 30 days before expiry — second renewal notice.
- At expiry — if you have not renewed, the certificate expires and tax resumes automatically on your next invoice.
To renew, resubmit through the wizard before expiry. A renewal goes back through review and returns to active.
Troubleshooting
"My invoice still shows tax after I submitted." Tax is only suppressed once the certificate is active. Submitted/Pending certificates do not yet suppress tax. Check the status on /billing/tax-exemption.
"My certificate expired and now I'm being taxed." That is by design — when a certificate lapses without renewal, tax resumes automatically. Submit a renewal and once it is active again, tax stops on the next invoice.
"My submission was rejected." Open the certificate to see the rejection reason (usually a mismatched name/number or an unreadable upload), correct it, and resubmit.
