This article describes the experience from the signer's perspective: receiving the request, reviewing and filling the document, completing the signature, and what happens next.
Who This Is For
Anyone who has received an eSign request by email. No account or login is required.
Receiving the Request
When an envelope is sent, each signer receives an email containing their unique signing link. The link is specific to that signer — it cannot be used by anyone else.
If you are expecting a document to sign but have not received the email, check your spam folder. The email comes from the organization that sent the document.
Opening the Document
- Click the link in the email. Your browser opens the eSign signing page.
- eSign records a Viewed event for your signing record at this point.
- The documents in the envelope are displayed for you to read.
Filling in Fields
- Review the document. Required fields are marked — you must fill them in before you can complete signing.
- For each field:
- Signature — draw or type your signature.
- Initials — draw or type your initials.
- Text — type the requested information.
- Date — enter the date (or accept the auto-filled current date if offered).
- Checkbox — check the box to indicate agreement or confirmation.
- Optional fields can be left blank.
Completing Your Signature
- Once all required fields are filled, click Complete.
- eSign records a Signed event with your IP address, browser information, and timestamp.
- If you are the last signer, the envelope status changes to Completed and the sender is notified.
- If there are additional signers after you (ordered flow), the next signer is automatically notified.
Declining to Sign
If you do not want to sign, click Decline and enter a reason. The envelope status changes to Declined and no further signers are contacted. The sender receives a notification and can void the envelope or create a new one with changes.
After Signing
Your signing link remains accessible to view but cannot be used to change or re-submit field values after you have completed. The sender can generate a final PDF of the completed envelope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sign from my phone? Yes. The signing page works in any modern mobile browser. No app is required.
What if I close the page before clicking Complete? Your field values are saved as you enter them (via the fields endpoint). You can return to the same link and pick up where you left off.
Can I change my signature after clicking Complete? No. Signing is final. If a correction is needed, contact the sender. They will need to void the envelope and send a new one.
